GLASGOW — Team Nigeria has emerged as the highest-ranked African nation at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, securing an impressive seventh-place finish on the final medals table with a haul of 24 medals.
The Nigerian contingent claimed 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals, securing a place among the top 10 countries overall and outperforming all other African nations at the Games.
The final standings were confirmed on the official X handle of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games at the close of competition on Sunday evening.
Golden Performances
Esther Nworgu gave Nigeria its first gold medal with a commanding performance in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event, setting the tone for what would prove a memorable campaign.
Other Nigerian athletes who made the nation proud included:
· Ezekiel Nathaniel, who won gold in the men’s 400-metre hurdles
· Goodness Nwachukwu, who smashed her own world record in the women’s F42 discus throw to claim gold
· Idris Riluwan, who secured gold in the men’s para-powerlifting event
· Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, who made history in the men’s shot put
Star athlete Tobi Amusan battled injury to secure a bronze medal in the women’s 100-metre hurdles.
Australia Dominate
Australia topped the medals table with 171 medals, comprising 70 gold, 45 silver and 56 bronze.
England finished second with 110 medals – 29 gold, 45 silver and 36 bronze – while Canada placed third with 62 medals, including 19 gold, 20 silver and 23 bronze.
India and hosts Scotland completed the top five with 39 medals each, with the hosts edged only by India’s higher silver medal count.
African Rivals
Nigeria’s seventh-place finish comfortably placed it ahead of every other African nation. South Africa finished 11th with 28 medals (seven gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze), while Kenya ended 13th with 12 medals.
Among the remaining African nations, Uganda finished 27th with three medals, Namibia placed 29th with three medals, and Ghana ended 30th with two medals. Lesotho and Zambia each concluded their campaigns with two bronze medals, while Gabon picked up a solitary bronze medal.
New Zealand finished sixth with 36 medals (10 gold, 14 silver and 12 bronze), just ahead of Nigeria, while Jamaica placed eighth, Wales ninth, and Malaysia rounded out the top 10.
Team Nigeria’s strong showing at Glasgow 2026 marks another impressive Commonwealth Games campaign, with the country’s 10 gold medals proving sufficient to secure its status as Africa’s leading sporting nation at the competition.
