FORMER Governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, has died at the age of 71.

Uduaghan reportedly died on the morning of Monday, 19 October 2026, after a brief illness, according to a statement issued by his family.

The family announced his death in a statement signed by Toju Andre Uduaghan, describing the former governor as a beloved father, brother, uncle and patriarch whose life and public service touched many people across Delta State and Nigeria.

The statement read in part: “It is with hearts weighed down by immeasurable grief and profound sorrow that we announce the passing to glory of our beloved Father, Brother, Uncle, and Patriarch, His Excellency, Dr Chief Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, former Governor of Delta State, who departed this world on the morning of 19th October 2026.”

The family expressed profound sadness over his death, noting that his absence would be deeply felt by relatives, friends, associates and those who worked with him during his years in public service.

Uduaghan, who was born on 22 October 1954, held several key positions in the Delta State Government before becoming governor.

He served as Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003 and as Secretary to the State Government from 2003 to 2007.

He subsequently became governor in 2007 and served two consecutive terms until 2015.

During his time in office, his administration pursued human and infrastructural development programmes across the state.

The family described his death as a significant loss to Delta State and the country, while expressing gratitude to God for his life and contributions to public service.

“We are grateful to Almighty God for his life, his service, and the legacy he leaves behind,” the statement added.

The family also prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and divine comfort for all those mourning him.

“Your memory will forever remain in our hearts, and your legacy will endure in the lives of those you touched,” the statement said.

Uduaghan’s death comes months after reports of his demise circulated on social media in June, prompting his media aide, Henry Unini, to publicly dismiss the claims at the time.

Unini had confirmed that the former governor was alive, although he acknowledged that Uduaghan had been experiencing health challenges and was receiving medical care.

The family has now formally announced his passing.

Further details concerning funeral arrangements were not contained in the announcement.

May his soul rest in peace.
