THE House of Representatives has called on the federal government to take urgent and decisive measures to protect Nigerians residing in South Africa, following renewed xenophobic attacks.
The federal lawmakers expressed deep concern over the resurgence of xenophobic violence in South Africa, which has claimed the lives of, at least two Nigerians, and several other foreign nationals in recent weeks, heightening fears over the safety of citizens abroad.
Raising a motion of urgent public importance, a Legislator from Ondo State, stressed the need for immediate government intervention to safeguard lives and property of Nigerians in South Africa, a position strongly supported by other lawmakers who described the situation as alarming.
The House resolved to set up an ad-hoc committee to engage relevant authorities and seek a lasting resolution to the crisis affecting Nigerians in the country.
In a separate development, the House raised concerns over the rising cost of aviation fuel, calling for urgent measures to stabilise prices in order to ease the burden on the aviation sector and air travelers.
The lawmakers, subsequently, mandated relevant committees to immediately investigate the spike in jet fuel prices and urged the federal government, through the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, to establish a direct stabilization arrangement with local airlines to ensure affordable and predictable fuel pricing.
