The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has commanded all police formations across Nigeria to crack down immediately on vehicles without registration number plates or those bearing concealed, altered, or defaced plates.
The directive came during the monthly conference with senior strategic officers at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
IGP Disu labelled the growing practice of driving unregistered vehicles or deliberately obscuring number plates as illegal and a grave danger to public safety and national security.
He stressed that proper vehicle registration plays an essential role in preventing crime, gathering intelligence, and enforcing the law, noting that criminals often exploit anonymous vehicles to commit offences and avoid capture.
As a result, the IGP has instructed all Commissioners of Police, Tactical Commanders, and heads of formations to begin immediate enforcement operations nationwide.
Officers will stop any vehicle found without approved plates or with tampered registration details, impound it, and pursue the appropriate legal action under existing laws.
The Inspector-General warned that no special treatment would apply to anyone flouting the rules and urged all vehicle owners to comply with registration requirements without delay.
