ONITSHA — Transporters and commuters narrowly escaped a major disaster on Saturday after a 40-foot trailer carrying a container plunged off a flyover at Nkpor, along the Enugu-Onitsha expressway, crashing into the busy New Parts Market area below.
Remarkably, no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded in the incident, which happened at about 9:00 am.
According to eyewitnesses, the trailer suffered brake failure as it approached the Nkpor Flyover. The driver made frantic attempts to regain control of the vehicle but was unsuccessful, and the trailer crashed down onto the Awka–Onitsha expressway.
Vehicles affected by the crash included a Volkswagen wagon, a commercial bus, and a tricycle (commonly known as a Keke). However, none of the vehicles had occupants at the time of the incident.
As of the time of filing this report, the driver of the trailer had yet to be located.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had not issued an official statement on the incident. Efforts to reach the FRSC Public Relations Officer, Margaret Onabe, failed as calls to her phone line did not connect.
Despite the heavy human and vehicular traffic typically seen in the area on a daily basis, no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded.
