When I Wanted To Drop Out Of School

WHEN I was in my final year at the University of Ibadan, I grew tired of school and desperately wanted to drop out.

One day, I left campus and went home because I needed money for my project. As soon as I told my parents, my mother hurried out to meet the president of her co-operative society.

A few hours later, she returned with the money. I was saddened because, secretly, I had hoped they would not be able to raise it, so that I would be forced to remain at home.

I truly wanted to drop out.

On another occasion, I fell ill. I knew what to do to get better, but I did not want to recover. I was hoping the illness would worsen and that my friends would have to ‘carry me home’. I wanted anything that would give me an excuse to leave.

I genuinely wanted to abandon my studies. But God, in His mercy, preserved me. I did not drop out. I graduated.

Dear student, discouragement may come. The urge to quit may feel overwhelming, but please do not give up.

Do not drop out. Someone is rooting for you. I am rooting for you.
