FORMER international defender Sam Sodje has praised the fighting spirit of Warri Wolves following their dramatic escape from relegation on the final day of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
The Seasiders secured their top-flight status with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Abia Warriors in Ozoro on Sunday – a result that sealed their survival after a turbulent campaign.
Reacting to the outcome, Sodje described the win as a testament to the team’s resilience and determination under immense pressure.
“It takes character and belief to win a game of that magnitude,” the former Super Eagles defender said. “The players showed courage when it mattered most, and they deserve credit for keeping Warri Wolves in the Premier League.”
Sodje also expressed optimism about the club’s future, particularly with plans for the team to return to the newly upgraded Warri City Stadium.
“Going back to Warri City Stadium will be a huge boost,” he added. “The fans, the atmosphere, and the improved facilities will inspire the team to perform better next season.”
Warri Wolves endured a difficult campaign, struggling for consistency and hovering around the relegation zone for much of the term. However, their heroics on the final day capped a late surge that ultimately preserved their NPFL status.
Sodje also commended the Delta State Sports Commission for its efforts in improving player welfare – an issue that has historically hampered club performance in Nigerian football.
“The Sports Commission has done well in supporting the players and ensuring better welfare conditions,” he noted. “That kind of backing is crucial for any team aiming to compete at a high level.”
Despite the survival success, Sodje warned that technical improvements must be addressed ahead of the 2026/2027 season.
“Survival is good, but it’s not enough,” he said. “The technical aspects of the team – coaching, tactics, and player development – must be strengthened if Warri Wolves want to compete at the top and not just fight relegation again.”
With stability now secured and infrastructure improvements under way, attention turns to rebuilding and reinforcing the squad as Warri Wolves aim for a more competitive outing in the next NPFL campaign.
