Sweden’s parliament has unanimously approved a new law banning marriages between cousins and other close relatives in a move aimed at tackling honour-related oppression, violence, and family pressure.
Under the new legislation, cousin marriages will no longer be allowed in the country, while marriages between cousins conducted abroad will generally not be recognized by Swedish authorities.
The law also prohibits marriages involving people directly related to a sibling of the other person, as well as unions between half-siblings and adopted siblings.
According to lawmakers, the decision is part of wider efforts to protect vulnerable individuals from forced or pressured marriages tied to cultural and family expectations.
The new rules are scheduled to take effect from July 1, 2026.
