Oyo Teachers Call Indefinite Strike Over Abducted Colleagues, Students

Juliet Oladele, Reporting

IBADAN – Teachers across Oyo State have been directed to begin an indefinite strike from Monday after the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) expressed fury over the continued captivity of educators and students kidnapped in Oriire Local Government Area.

The union ordered all primary and secondary school teachers in the state to withdraw their services from 1st June, 2026, and vowed that schools will remain closed until every victim is safely and unconditionally released.

The directive came from the NUT’s national leadership, which said it had grown deeply concerned over the prolonged detention of the kidnapped group, who have been held since 15th May, 2026.

“We cannot normalise this. We can’t normalise knowing that a child is somewhere in a forest and their parents do not know where they are. We can’t normalise this.”

According to the union, repeated appeals to government authorities and security agencies have failed to produce meaningful results, leaving them with no choice but to shut down academic activities across the state.

In a further escalation, the NUT has also ordered all its state branches nationwide to organise solidarity rallies on 2nd June, 2026, in an effort to draw urgent attention to the escalating insecurity plaguing schools.

The union is demanding stronger protection for teachers and learners.

The statement from NUT leaders revealed that anxiety has intensified following unconfirmed reports that some of the victims may have died in captivity.

Adding to the distress, emotional video appeals from the abductees themselves have continued to emerge, pleading for urgent government intervention.

“Schools, teachers and students should never become targets of criminal elements,” the union said, calling on the Federal Government, Oyo State Government and security agencies to intensify rescue efforts immediately.

The NUT maintained that education cannot thrive in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity and vowed to continue lawful actions until all abducted victims are safely returned.

Stonix News reports that the Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has visited families of the abductees with a promise of a safe return of their loved ones.
