Warri Crisis: Tinubu Intervenes As Ijaw, Itsekiri Groups Agree Power-Sharing Deal

ABUJA — Warring factions from the Ijaw and Itsekiri ethnic nationalities in Delta State have reached a power-sharing agreement over the proposed Warri Federal Constituency II seat, following direct intervention from President Bola Tinubu.

The breakthrough came late on Friday night, 12th June, during a crisis meeting convened at the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, in Abuja.

Under the terms of the resolution, the House of Representatives seat for the proposed constituency will rotate between the two communities.

The Ijaw nationality will hold the seat for two consecutive terms before it shifts to the Itsekiri for an equal tenure.

The agreement was formally signed on behalf of the Ijaw by former Deputy Governor of Delta State, Kingsley Otuaro, and Dr Eric Omare. Sir A.S. Mene and Chief Robinson Ariyo signed for the Itsekiri side.

NSA Nuhu Ribadu appended his signature on behalf of the Federal Government, whilst Olorogun Victor Okumagba and Chief Westham Adehor served as witnesses.

The deal marks a significant step towards ending the lingering dispute over electoral ward delineation that has long fuelled tensions between the two groups in the oil-rich region.
