THE Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has approved the release of ₦300 million to support state indigenes at the Nigerian Law School and those recently returned from South Africa.
According to a statement issued in Owerri by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, 250 returnees from South Africa will receive ₦1 million each to aid their rehabilitation and reintegration, while 100 law students from Imo will receive ₦500,000 each to help cope with the rising cost of living.
The commissioner explained that the governor was moved to act by the difficult circumstances facing the beneficiaries.
“The law students made a passionate appeal to His Excellency to support them to cushion the global inflation as regards the cost of living. As a caring father, he responded promptly,” Mr Emelumba said.
He added that the assistance to the South African returnees stemmed from the governor’s empathy. “The traumatised indigenes needed help,” he said, noting that Mr Uzodimma had approved what he described as a “reintegration fund” for them.
The commissioner said the governor believed that those forced to leave South Africa required a helping hand from the government to settle down and reintegrate into society with minimal discomfort.
He further noted that under the governor’s “shared prosperity” agenda, every citizen is cared for alongside the state’s infrastructural revolution.
Regarding the law students, Mr Emelumba recalled that this was not the first time the governor had come to their aid.

“Most of them are on the scholarship list of the state government, and from time to time, the governor extends a helping hand to them,” he added.
