A Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO) has been crushed in a horrific road accident at Otokutu Gate in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday, July 15, while the officer was reportedly carrying out his official enforcement duties.
According to an eyewitness account gathered by NaijaParrot Digital Media, the VIO officer had held onto the front door of a trailer loaded with rice and beans during an enforcement stop.
The truck allegedly continued moving while the officer was still holding on, causing him to lose his grip.
He was subsequently crushed by the heavy-duty vehicle and died instantly at the scene.
A crowd of sympathisers and road users quickly gathered at the location, with many expressing shock and grief over the tragic loss of the officer.
As of the time of reporting, the identity of the deceased officer had not been officially released, and details regarding the exact circumstances leading to the incident remain sketchy.
Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State, Bright Edafe, has confirmed to the incident.
He further disclosed that the deceased’s body has been deposited in a morgue.
He said the driver of the tipper truck involved in the fatal accident has been taken into police custody as investigations continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Delta State Command of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) has also not issued any statement regarding the incident.
Investigations are expected to be launched to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
