A senior leader of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has launched a robust defence of Pastor Leke Adeboye’s recent appointment, urging critics to judge the General Overseer’s son on his merits rather than his family name.
Pastor Odesola Johnson Funso, Pastor-in-Charge of Continent 3, penned a strongly-worded opinion piece titled “Mind Your Business: Let Pastor Leke Adeboye Be,” in which he pushed back against allegations of favouritism following the appointment of Leke and his wife, Pastor Titilope Adeboye, as Assistant Pastors-in-Charge of Region 65.
In his defence, Pastor Odesola questioned the double standard often applied to children of prominent clergy, pointing out that offspring who follow their parents into law, medicine, business or politics are rarely met with automatic accusations of nepotism.
“Why should children of prominent Christian leaders be subjected to such allegations when they assume responsibilities within the church?” he asked.
According to the Continent 3 leader, Pastor Leke Adeboye has amassed considerable ministerial experience over the years rather than suddenly emerging into leadership solely because of his relationship with RCCG General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye.
He cited Leke’s previous roles – including Executive Assistant to the General Overseer, Pastors’ Seed Family Coordinator, parish pastor, youth ministry leader and coordinator of major church programmes – as evidence of his proven track record.
Pastor Odesola acknowledged that Leke’s family background naturally affords him visibility, but stressed that visibility should not be automatically conflated with incompetence or evidence of favouritism.
He argued that family connections only become problematic when they replace competence, character and due process.
The cleric also moved to dismiss speculation that the appointment represents a deliberate succession plan for Leke to eventually take over the helm of RCCG, describing such claims as entirely unsupported by any official announcement from the church.
He noted that RCCG operates through a structured administrative system involving multiple levels of pastoral leadership, making it inappropriate for outsiders to assume that major appointments are simply personal decisions of the General Overseer.
While conceding the right of church members and the public to ask legitimate questions about leadership appointments, Pastor Odesola cautioned against turning speculation into established fact.
He urged critics to allow Pastor Leke to serve and prove his capacity through his performance, character and spiritual maturity.
“Let him work. Let him serve. Let him prove himself,” Pastor Odesola declared, emphasising that Leke should be held accountable for his performance but not condemned simply because he was born into the family of the RCCG General Overseer.
