OLU Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most respected actors, but there are lesser-known details about his life and career that go beyond his decades in Nollywood.

Following his death at the age of 84, STONIX NEWS takes a look at 10 facts about the veteran thespian that many may not have known.

1. He was inspired to act after watching Hubert Ogunde

After watching one of Ogunde’s concert parties at the Colonial Hotel in Kano, Jacobs became interested in pursuing acting professionally.

2. He trained in London

Before becoming a familiar face in Nigerian films, Jacobs travelled to Britain to study acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. His training helped lay the foundation for a career that would span theatre, television and film.

3. He worked on British television

Jacobs had already established himself as an actor in Britain before his prominence in Nollywood. He appeared in several British television productions, including The Goodies, Till Death Us Do Part, Barlow at Large and The Professionals.

4. His film credits went beyond Africa

Jacobs appeared in international films including The Dogs of War, Pirates and Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend. These roles came during the period when he was building his career outside Nigeria.

5. He was also a stage actor

Although many Nigerians know Jacobs mainly for his film roles, theatre was an important part of his career. His professional experience on stage in Britain contributed to his reputation as an actor with formal theatrical training.

7. He won one of Africa’s major film awards

In 2007, Jacobs won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in Dancing Heart. The award added to his recognition as one of the continent’s leading screen actors.

8. He was made an MFR

In 2011, Jacobs was conferred with the Nigerian national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) for his contribution to the country’s entertainment industry.

9. He and Joke Silva built an entertainment company together

Jacobs and his wife, actress Joke Silva, co-founded the Lufodo Group. The company has interests in film production, theatre and performing arts education, including the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts.

10. His influence extended beyond acting

Jacobs’ contribution to the Nigerian entertainment industry was not limited to the roles he played on screen. Through his work in production, theatre and arts education, he was also involved in developing the industry and creating opportunities for younger performers.
