NIGERIA’S Falconets suffered a crushing 1-0 defeat to Colombia in their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup quarter-final on Sunday, conceding in stoppage time just when extra time appeared certain.
Valerin Loboa broke Nigerian hearts in the 92nd minute, firing past the Nigerian goalkeeper to send the host nation into the semi-finals and end the Falconets’ impressive tournament run.
Red Card Proves Pivotal
The match turned decisively in the 77th minute when Nigeria were reduced to ten players. Kafayat Mafisere was given her marching orders by the referee, with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) subsequently confirming the decision following a review.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Falconets refused to buckle. Nigeria continued to press forward and carved out opportunities late on, with Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei going close in the seventh minute of added time.
Adeshina Denied by Stunning Save
Nigeria’s best chance of the contest fell to defender Tumininu Adeshina, who stepped forward from the back and unleashed a ferocious left-footed strike from distance that appeared destined for the top corner.
Colombian goalkeeper Louisa Agudelo produced a superb save, tipping the ball over the crossbar.
The first half ended goalless, with both sides creating chances. Loboa and Isabella Diaz threatened for Colombia, while Nigeria’s Favour Nkwocha, Mafisere, Akekoromowei and Onyedikachi Ekezie all attempted to find the breakthrough after the interval.
Late Changes Unable to Turn the Tide
Falconets coach made several changes in an attempt to swing the contest, introducing Winner Onajite David, Precious Oscar and Victory Lucky at various stages of the second half. However, Colombia’s resilience and the extra space afforded by Nigeria’s numerical disadvantage ultimately told.
Colombia will now face either DPR Korea or Canada for a place in the semi-finals.
Heartbreak for Nigeria
The defeat brings an abrupt end to what had been a promising campaign for the Falconets, who had previously thrashed New Caledonia 10-1 and England 3-0 to reach the knockout stages. Nigeria had also held China to a draw in the group phase.
For Colombia, the victory represents a famous night on home soil and keeps their dream of World Cup glory alive.
