Rita Enemuru, Reporting
OPERATIONS at the Macaraba oil field in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State have been brought to a complete halt following a shutdown by the Ifie-Kporo community.
The community, which claims to be the host of Wells 24 and 25 operated by Chevron Nigeria Limited, staged a peaceful protest to demand recognition and an end to what they describe as gross marginalisation.

The protest, which saw community members travel in multiple speedboats to the oil field, was aimed at forcing the oil multinational to comply with standard best practices regarding engagement with its host communities.
Carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Chevron, you can’t operate in our community and refuse to recognize Ifie-Kporo Community as host” and “Chevron give us our right or leave our land. Enough is enough,” the protesters made their grievances clear.
They warned that operations would remain suspended until their demands are met.
Speaking during the protest, community representatives expressed their frustration with Chevron’s perceived deceitful and irresponsible attitude over the years.
They maintained a peaceful disposition but stated that they would occupy the location until a desired result is achieved.
The protesters were emphatic that Wells 24 and 25 are situated on their ancestral land.
They issued a stern warning to Chevron Nigeria Limited to stay off both wells unless it is prepared to act lawfully, accord the community its rightful host community status, and allow them to enjoy all rights stipulated in the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) to fast-track growth and development.
The community called on Chevron not to plunge the once-peaceful area into chaos, urging the company to follow the precedent set during the time of Gulf, when Ifie-Kporo was duly recognised as the host community and owner of the land where the oil wells are located.
As of the time of this report, operations in the Well 25 Macaraba oil field have been completely shut down, with workers evacuated from the site.
Authorities of Chevron have yet to respond to the protest and allegations as of the time of filing the report.
