Ronaldo Fires Back At Critics: ‘You’ve Been Trying To Kill Me for 23 Years’

CRISTIANO Ronaldo delivered a typically defiant performance at the press conference here today, challenging his detractors and insisting that neither victory nor defeat in this World Cup will define his legendary career.

The 41-year-old Portugal superstar, speaking on the eve of a blockbuster last-16 clash with Spain at the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium, conceded with characteristic candour that “I am not the player I used to be” — but swiftly reminded everyone that he remains a force to be reckoned with.

“I am not doing too bad,” the former Manchester United, Juventus and Real Madrid icon retorted, pointing to his three goals in North America so far, including a penalty in the 2-1 victory over Croatia in the last 32.

In what will be his final World Cup appearance, Ronaldo was by turns bullish, jovial and sentimental as he fielded questions about his future and the intense scrutiny that has followed him throughout his career.

“It’s been like this since I was 18, it is not going to change,” he told journalists, visibly relishing the exchange. “You have been trying to kill me for the past 23 years, but you must have seen that is not worth it, it’s a waste of time, but you try and try and try and try and try.”

The Portugal skipper, who holds the record as international football’s all-time leading scorer, refused to be drawn on when he would end his international career, shooting back at one reporter: “I will stop when I choose, not when you choose. You always ask the same question.”

In a moment of remarkable candour, Ronaldo even singled out a journalist he knows does not care for him, challenging him directly to ask a question.

“To speak to you, some of you, those who do not like us especially — I remember people’s faces very well,” he said, grinning.

The veteran attacker declared this World Cup the one he has enjoyed most, citing the “emotions” of the experience both on and off the pitch. He received a round of applause as he left the conference.

“I am not going to be more Cristiano Ronaldo or less because I win the World Cup,” he insisted. “Age gives you maturity and experience to see how relative things can be.”

Turning reflective, he added: “I even say thanks for the attacks I feel after I turned 40… the criticism is how you grow, so thank you for doing this.”

With his side set to face Spain in what promises to be a gripping knockout encounter, Ronaldo was adamant that his legacy is secure regardless of the outcome.

“Whatever happens tomorrow, Cristiano Ronaldo will leave with a clear conscience — not 100 per cent but 1,000 per cent because in life and football I gave everything.”
