SOUTH African football is in mourning today following the devastating death of World Cup midfielder Jayden Adams at just 25 years old.

The Bafana Bafana star, who represented his country at the ongoing 2026 World Cup in the United States, was found dead at a house in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning.

Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie confirmed the news in an emotional statement, describing the loss as “profoundly shocking”.

“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams,” McKenzie said. “South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents.”

Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, with Western Cape police spokesperson FC van Wyk confirming that “circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation”. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

A Tournament  Marked by Personal Tragedy

Adams’ death comes less than a month after the passing of his grandmother, which occurred on the eve of South Africa’s crucial Group A match against Czechia at Atlanta Stadium.

Despite his personal grief, the midfielder started that match and “gave his all while carrying the burden of losing his grandmother,” the South African Football Association said at the time.

The 25-year-old featured in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches as Bafana Bafana made history by reaching the Round of 32 for the first time. He did not feature in the knockout defeat to Canada.

Rising Star’s Football Journey

Born in Cape Town, Adams emerged through the Stellenbosch FC academy, becoming the club’s first youth graduate to sign a professional contract in August 2020.

He went on to make 139 appearances for the Cape Winelands side, helping them secure the Carling Knockout in 2023 before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025.

At Sundowns, the talented midfielder added a Premiership title and a CAF Champions League crown to his growing list of honours.

Adams was also part of the South Africa squad that finished third at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, establishing himself as a key figure in the national team setup.

Global Tributes Pour In

FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his deep sorrow at the news, saying he was “so incredibly sad to hear” of Adams’ passing.

“My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at FIFA and the global football community, are with his family, friends and teammates,” Infantino said in a statement.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) also paid tribute, posting on X: “Football has lost one of its own.”

The football world now mourns a talent taken far too soon, as tributes continue to flood in for the young midfielder who represented his nation with distinction on the global stage.
