DEFENDING champions Paris St-Germain retained the European Champions League trophy on Saturday evening after a nerve-shredding 4-3 penalty shootout victory over a valiant Arsenal side at a rain-soaked Stade de France.
The two sides had finished 1-1 after extra time, with Kai Havertz’s early strike for the Gunners cancelled out by Ousmane Dembélé’s second-half penalty
Arsenal, crowned Premier League champions only a fortnight ago, began with intent and stunned the home crowd inside six minutes. Havertz, drifting in from the right, met a pinpoint cross and arrowed a low finish past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The first half ended with Mikel Arteta’s side enjoying the lion’s share of possession and looking composed on the biggest stage.
PSG, however, grew into the contest after the interval. The breakthrough came in the 65th minute when a clumsy challenge by Mosquera on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia inside the area left the Romanian referee with no choice.
Dembélé stepped up and sent David Raya the wrong way to level the scores.
Neither side could find a winner in regulation or extra time, despite frantic late chances for both Kylian Mbappé and Bukayo Saka.
That set the stage for a tense shootout. After five successful penalties apiece, Arsenal’s Eberechi Eze saw his weak effort saved by Donnarumma.
Moments later, Gabriel Martinelli – known simply as Gabriel – blazed his spot-kick over the crossbar, handing PSG an unassailable lead and sparking wild celebrations among the Parisian faithful.
“The lads showed incredible character,” said PSG captain Marquinhos. “Arsenal are a top side, but we never gave up. This is for our fans.”
A dejected Arteta added: “I couldn’t be prouder of my players. We went toe to toe with the champions. Football can be cruel, but we’ll learn and come back stronger.”
PSG become the first team to retain the Champions League since Real Madrid in 2017, cementing their status as Europe’s dominant force.
