LONDON – The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Jamaica’s national football team on Saturday to lift the Unity Cup trophy for the fourth time.
Midfielder Alhassan Yusuf was the star of the show at the London venue, netting a brace in the third and 91st minutes to help Nigeria successfully defend the title they won in the previous edition of the annual four-nation tournament.
Yusuf opened the scoring early in the contest, giving Nigeria a dream start. Terem Moffi then doubled the advantage after meeting a pinpoint cross from Femi Azeez, who had beaten his marker with ease down the flank.
Jamaica pushed for a way back into the match, but Nigeria’s defence held firm. In stoppage time, Yusuf put the result beyond doubt, latching onto a pass from Phil Otele before firing past the Jamaican goalkeeper to complete his brace and seal a dominant win.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Super Eagles reached the final after a 2-0 semi-final victory over Zimbabwe, with Femi Azeez scoring both goals on that occasion.
Saturday’s triumph gives Nigeria a second consecutive Unity Cup title and a fourth overall.
The tournament, held annually in London, features nations with large diaspora communities in the United Kingdom.
