THE Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has called for stronger collaboration between security agencies and stakeholders in the livestock sector as part of efforts to address Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.

Disu made the call on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), led by its National President, Alhaji Baba Othman Ngelzarma, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of longstanding concerns over insecurity across parts of the country, particularly in the Middle Belt and southern regions, where violent clashes involving herders and farming communities have claimed thousands of lives over the years.

While MACBAN has consistently distanced itself from criminal elements and condemned acts of violence, the association has frequently come under public scrutiny due to the activities of armed herders often blamed for attacks, killings, kidnappings and the destruction of farmlands in affected communities.

Welcoming the delegation, the IGP acknowledged the importance of the livestock sector to Nigeria’s economy and stressed the need for continuous partnership between communities and security agencies in tackling security threats.

He emphasised that sustainable peace and security could only be achieved through mutual trust, dialogue, respect for the rule of law and the timely sharing of credible intelligence.

According to the police chief, all stakeholders must promote peaceful coexistence among communities and ensure that their activities remain within the confines of the law.

Disu reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force would remain impartial in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities and would continue to protect the rights of all citizens irrespective of ethnic, religious or occupational affiliations.

He further assured that individuals found engaging in criminal activities would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, MACBAN President, Alhaji Baba Othman Ngelzarma, congratulated the IGP on his appointment and commended ongoing efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen professionalism, accountability and public confidence in policing.

Ngelzarma reaffirmed the association’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and pledged continued cooperation with security agencies in support of national security and stability.

The visit underscores growing efforts by security authorities to engage critical stakeholders in sectors often affected by security challenges.

In recent years, government agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders and livestock associations have been encouraged to work together to curb violence, improve intelligence gathering and promote peaceful conflict resolution.

Responding, the IGP expressed appreciation for the visit and reiterated the readiness of the Nigeria Police Force to continue engaging stakeholders across various sectors to strengthen public safety, promote peaceful coexistence and enhance community participation in policing.
