A BOUNTY of N1 million has been reportedly placed for information leading to the arrest of the suspect in the brutal killing of a 100-level student of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), Effurun, Delta State.
Joseph Ogheneruno Ebireri was allegedly stabbed to death by his elder brother, identified only as Joshua, following a disagreement over a pair of bathroom slippers.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening at Hostel C on the university campus.
According to accounts from students, a minor disagreement over the slippers escalated into a heated argument.
Witnesses said the suspect allegedly picked up a dagger and stabbed his younger brother multiple times before fleeing the scene.
Despite his injuries, the victim reportedly managed to crawl to another section of the hostel, where he was discovered by fellow students who raised the alarm.
He was rushed for medical attention but later confirmed dead. His remains have since been deposited in a mortuary.
The Vice-Chancellor of FUPRE, Professor Ezekiel Agbalagba, confirmed the incident, describing it as tragic.
He noted that the university had begun efforts to track down the suspect and hand him over to law enforcement.
“It was a misunderstanding between two brothers of the same mother, the same father.
“We are trying to get the young man who committed heinous crimes and hand him over to the police. As of now, we are still looking for him,” Agbalagba said.
The Delta State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident, noting that the motive behind the killing had yet to be ascertained.
“The cause of the murder has not yet been ascertained, but the incident has been confirmed,” he said.
Reports indicate that a N1 million bounty has been placed for information that could assist in locating and apprehending the fleeing suspect.
The killing has sent shockwaves across the campus, with distraught students struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.
It remained unclear at press time whether the victim’s parents had been formally notified of the incident.
